From Your 4-H Extension Agent

Greetings,

I am so thrilled that you and your family have taken an interest in the DeSoto County 4-H program. It’s a national organization that will benefit your child/children in many ways. Through 4-H they will have the opportunity to travel, meet friends, earn scholarships and much more. It’s a phenomenal organization that teaches many life skills that will aid in preparing your son or daughter for their future. 4-H provides opportunities for leadership, teamwork, collaboration and community service.

Linked below are enrollment forms. Please fill one out for each child between the ages of 8-18, that you are interested in signing up for the program. Mail or drop the forms by our office so we can enroll your child in the 4-H system. Once that happens, you will begin to receive our newsletter so you can see what’s going on and where you want to get plugged in at.

Learn how to get involved in the program!

1. Parents fill out the Enrollment Form*, sign it and return it to DeSoto County Extension Office
2. An Extension Agent will enter them into the digital system.
3. They are then considered a DeSoto County 4-Her!
4. You will start to receive the newsletter and learn about opportunities to get involved with us

*The Enrollment Form and the 4-H Code of Conduct and the Health & Medical Form can all be picked up at the Extension Office.

What is 4-H

Purpose:

The purpose of 4-H is to help young people become productive citizens by instructing them in useful skills, community service, and personal development.

Goal:

The goal of 4-H is to develop citizenship, leadership, responsibility and life skills of youth through experiential learning programs and a positive youth development approach.

FAQ's

DeSoto County 4-H FAQ’s

We've rounded up some of our most asked questions and provided answers. Take a look!

1. Does 4-H costs money? 4-H in DeSoto County is free to enroll! Once your child chooses a project area or club, there might be fees or costs for activities or supplies, but you will know ahead of time if so.
2. How often does 4-H meet? This depends on what your child is involved in. Community Clubs meet once per month, since they run year round. Project area groups (Chick Chain and Shooting Sports) might meet more during their set "season."  
3. How do I enroll my child in 4-H? You can enroll your kid(s) by filling out an enrollment form and turning it into DeSoto County Extension Office.
4. What is the age range for 4-H? 4-H is available to kids ages 8-18. There is a CloverBud program for ages 5-7. Most contests and competitions won’t allow a 4-Her to participate until they’re 8 years old. Their age is based off of what they are on January 1^st of the current year.
5. Can my child be a part of 4-H in multiple counties? No, you are only allowed to be a member of 4-H in one county in the state of Mississippi. You can transfer your membership from county to county.
6. Does my child’s 4-H membership transfer from another state? Technically no, but you can enroll into our program once you've moved from another state and get involved just as you were in your previous state.
7. What all does 4-H offer? 4-H as a national organization offers many programs and project areas, more so than what we have here in DeSoto County. We currently have Shooting Sports, Livestock, Chicken Chain, Sewing and Horticulture.
8. Do I have to stay with my child at 4-H events and activities? Yes, it is appreciated and recommended that you accompany your 4-Her to insure the best experience possible.
9. Can I volunteer and help out? YES! We are constantly needing volunteers. Simply follow the volunteer application process to become certified.

11. Where is the Extension Office located in DeSoto County? It is located in Hernando at 3260 Hwy 51 South. Go passed the square like you’re heading to Cedar Hill Farms, we are on the left right passed the Bait and Tackle Shop gas station. You’ll drive around to the back of the building where the MISSISSIPPI STATE EXTENSION sign is located.
