STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Low voter turnout may not be a big deal to some Mississippians, but for a group of concerned experts with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, a lack of interest in the election process signals an educational opportunity.

Jason Camp, an Extension associate with the Center for Government and Community Development, said he and his colleagues wanted to boost involvement and interest in local government.

STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Twenty-four newly elected tax assessors and collectors from across the state spent three days at Mississippi State University this week honing the skills they will use when they take office next year.

The MSU Extension Service Center for Government and Community Development hosted a three-day orientation for new tax assessors and collectors. During that time, the officials received training in job functions, including property assessment, homestead exemption, vehicle title registration, appraisals and tax collection.

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Four young Mississippians will have the opportunity to represent 4-H and the Mississippi State University Center for Government and Community Development as pages in the 2015 State Legislature.

All senior 4-H’ers are encouraged to apply for the positions with the 2015 Lt. Governor Tate Reeves 4-H Senate Page Program. Selected applicants will serve in the Mississippi Senate the week of Feb. 9-13. To be considered, applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Dec. 3.

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- One of local government’s oldest and most essential jobs is being recognized for its services during an upcoming week of local, national and international activities.

The 44th annual Municipal Clerks Week will be observed May 5-11. During this week, municipal clerks in many of Mississippi’s cities, towns and villages will take part in activities to increase the public’s awareness of municipal clerks and the vital services they provide for local government and the community.

MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Sixteen tax assessors and appraisers from throughout Mississippi recently participated in the Certified Appraiser School at Mississippi State University.

The March 3-7 and March 17-21 training sessions were conducted by the Mississippi Department of Revenue and coordinated by the MSU Extension Service Center for Government and Community Development.
