STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The annual Edward C. Martin Jr. Landscape Symposium at Mississippi State University allows home gardeners and landscape professionals to learn from experts in their fields as they gather ideas for better landscapes.

This year, the 64th symposium will be held Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bost Auditorium at MSU. A slate of MSU experts will address a variety of smart landscape topics. Tickets are $30 at the door.

Event coordinator Bob Brzuszek, an MSU Extension Service professor of landscape architecture, said a smart landscape is not just a good-looking and low maintenance, but an environment that encourages wildlife, uses water wisely, lowers energy costs, and benefits both home and neighborhoods.

“A smart landscape uses tried and trusted methods with a little artistic flair to create an attractive and ecologically sound garden that will complement your home and neighborhood,” Brzuszek said.

Gary Bachman, MSU Extension horticulturist, columnist and host of Southern Gardening, will discuss changing the garden paradigm. He will give his observations on how perceptions and expectations for gardens have changed in the last 10 to 20 years.

Geoff Denny, MSU assistant Extension professor and director of the Mississippi State Trial Gardens, is slated to talk about some of his favorite new cultivars he has found that thrive in Mississippi.

The event will conclude with a panel taking garden questions.
