Extension hosts cover crop field day
CLARKSDALE, Miss. -- Growers who planted cover crops for the first time last year will share their experiences with other producers at a cover crop field day.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service will host Planting Tips, Experiences and Challenges July 17 at Big River Farms in Clarksdale. Co-sponsors of the event include the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Delta FARM, Delta Precision and Local Seed Company.
Attendees will learn about cover crop variety selection, changes to soil during the first year of cover crop planting, and challenges local farmers faced when planting cover crops and cash crops for the first time.
Other topics will include equipment for planting cover crops and soil response to heavy covers.
Preregistration for the free event is not required. It begins at 10 a.m. at Big River Farms before moving to the Clarksdale Country Club. A lunch will be provided there, so an RSVP in advance is requested.
To get to the farm traveling south from Clarksdale on U.S. Highway 61, take a right on Bobo New Africa Road and an immediate right onto Bramlett-Davenport Road. The event site will be on the left.
To RSVP, email Beth Baker at beth.baker@msstate.edu or call 662-552-8781.
