Prescribed fire meeting will be offered Nov. 12
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Using prescribed fire is an important part of managing private timberland, but doing so correctly requires precision.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service is helping to offer “Fire on the Forty: Applying Prescribed Fire on Private Lands.” This workshop is part of the sixth annual meeting of the Mississippi Prescribed Fire Council to be held Nov. 12 in Hattiesburg.
A variety of information will be presented on the use of prescribed fire in land management. Participants will learn about the historical fire regime in a longleaf pine forest system, fire and livestock interactions to manage forest vegetation, minimizing prescribed fire liability, applying prescribed fire in different seasons to accomplish landowners objectives, and perspectives of a private landowner and consulting forester on how they use prescribed fire.
At the conclusion of the presentations, a moderated panel discussion will further explore the topic and address prescribed fire questions from participants.
The $20 registration fee covers a break, lunch and materials. Continuing education credits are available for registered foresters. The event will be held at the Thad Cochran Center on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. Registration must be received by Nov. 5.
