Pesticide disposal day set for Dec. 16
YAZOO CITY, Miss. -- Mississippi farmers can safely remove leftover pesticides from their property during a free disposal event on Dec. 16 in Yazoo City.
Insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other pesticide products can be dropped off at the former Tal Port building located at 2003 Gordon Avenue between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.
No household waste, tires, rinsates, empty containers or products in bulk containers will be accepted.
Farmers must transport their waste pesticides to the drop-off site. Weak or leaking containers must be placed inside other sturdy, leak-proof containers, which also will be collected. Absorbents used to clean up spilled materials can be placed in heavy-duty garbage bags for collection.
Loads weighing more than 1,000 pounds should be marked with the appropriate placards or split into two vehicles for transport. All loads should be protected with tarps or other waterproof coverings in rainy weather.
Collected waste is categorized, repacked and transported out of state for disposal or recycling in accordance with state and federal laws.
Due to road construction on Highway 3, organizers suggest participants take Highway 49 to East 15th Street and then turn onto Gordon Avenue.
For more information about the event or safe transport, contact the county Extension office.
The event is organized by the Mississippi State University Extension Service and funded by the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality.
