Oct. 17 field day covers recordkeeping, budgeting
GOODMAN -- Small-scale fruit and vegetable producers can attend a field day Oct. 17 in Goodman to learn how to create and follow a financial plan to produce a profit.
The Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production Demonstration Farm will host Velma Oliver, farm management and loan specialist with Alcorn State University. She will help farmers understand recordkeeping and budgeting for items such as labor, equipment and inputs.
Steve Murray, a planner with the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, will show participants how to use a computer program for financial recordkeeping.
Representatives with the University of Mississippi Transactional Law Clinic will provide free, one-on-one consultations for business and legal issues.
The field day is free and open to the public. The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Advance registration is required. Lunch and materials will be provided.
The Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production is located between Goodman and Durant in Holmes County, one mile southwest of Highway 51 at 1184 Coleman Road.

Field days continue for the rest of the year and are held on the third Friday of each month through November. The last field day is scheduled for Dec. 12.
The field days are done in cooperation with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Alcorn State University Extension Program and the University of Mississippi Transactional Law Clinic.
The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Grant Program fund the program.
