MSU experts share tips to manage insects, weeds
GOODMAN -- Farmers and gardeners can learn how to control insects, weeds and diseases at the Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production Demonstration Farm field day on June 20.
Blake Layton, an entomologist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, will explain how to identify, monitor and control insect pests.
Alan Henn, an Extension plant pathologist and research professor with the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, will tell how to identify and manage weeds and diseases.
Vendor spaces are available to producers and service providers who want to sell and display produce, products and services during the field day.
Representatives with the University of Mississippi Transactional Law Clinic will offer free legal and business advice.
Alliance partner farmers and gardeners can pick up spring transplants of bell pepper, tomato, hot pepper, sweet pepper, eggplant, cucumber and squash. These transplants also are available for free to those who grow produce to sell at farmers markets or local schools or are beginning a school or community garden.
The field day is free and open to the public. The event begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Advance registration is required. Lunch and materials will be provided.
With enough interest, Roberto Gallardo, an associate professor with the Extension Center for Technology Outreach, will offer a follow-up workshop on setting up and using social media platforms during the July 14 field day. These field days continue for the rest of the year and are held on the third Friday of each month through November. The last field day is scheduled for Dec. 12.
The Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production is located between Goodman and Durant, one mile southwest of Highway 51 at 1184 Coleman Road.
The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Grant Program fund the programs.
