Master Clothing Volunteers plan July 31 meeting
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Mississippi’s Master Clothing Volunteers will meet soon in Rankin County to learn some of the latest developments and trends in textiles and home decor.
The annual state meeting at the Rankin County Extension Office is open to nonmembers on July 31 and Aug. 1. A business meeting for Master Clothing Volunteers is scheduled on Aug. 2. Registration fees are required, with $5 discounts if made before July 18.
Topics to be covered include sewing for various body shapes, sewing lingerie, marbleizing fabric, quilt art, lamp shades, polar fleece capes and button bracelets.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service administers the Master Clothing Volunteer program, which develops leadership and skills using textile techniques and garment construction, heritage sewing and home decor. Master Clothing Volunteers help youth, families and community groups learn how to buy, construct and care for garments and to create other textile items for the home and individuals.
The Master Clothing Volunteers offer training in heritage sewing, such as quilting, smocking and ribbon embroidery; hand sewing such as crocheting, knitting and tatting; as well as basic home decor sewing, felting, clothing construction and clothing alteration. The training helps participants increase their knowledge and skills as well as learn new methods.
The Master Clothing Volunteer program is continually identifying new avenues to educate Mississippi families. It is an avenue in which one can share textile skills with others and for future generations.
