Delta research center gains new leadership
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Joe Street has been named the new head of the Delta Research and Extension Center, Mississippi State University's facility in Stoneville.
Street replaces Jimmy Smith, who served as head of the center for 11 years before requesting reassignment as research professor. Effective Aug. 15, Street will transfer from the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona to Stoneville.
"Dr. Street has a unique mix of training and experiences for this role," said Vance Watson, vice president of MSU's Division of Agriculture, Forestry and Veterinary Medicine. "He served for 17 years as a research scientist at Stoneville, six years in a joint appointment as research scientist/Extension specialist, and most recently as head of the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center. I have the utmost confidence in his leadership abilities."
Watson also praised Smith's leadership of the Delta Research and Extension Center.
"The Delta Research and Extension Center and Stoneville are at the very heart of Dr. Smith's being," Watson said. "Under his leadership, the Center has accomplished many things. There has been unprecedented growth in infrastructure with the Capps Center, the National Warmwater Aquaculture Center, the Delta Health Alliance, many advances with the U.S. Department of Agriculture partnership, and the expansion of the research and Extension portfolio to meet the needs of 21st century agriculture."
