Conference targets drug benefit issues
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Medicare participants can learn about new prescription drug benefits during a free video conference Aug. 15.
Mississippi State University's Extension Service is sponsoring the interactive conference at county offices around the state. Anyone with interest in the new Medicare Part D program should contact a county Extension office to find the nearest conference site. A representative of the Social Security Administration will present information on the Medicare Part D program that begins Jan. 1.
Judith Breland, Stone County Extension director and an organizer of the conference, said Social Security offices have mailed applications for the program to Medicare participants who may be eligible for the prescription drug benefits. The program will provide assistance to help participants meet monthly premiums, deductibles and drug co-payments.
"These applications must be completed and returned to determine if someone qualifies for additional help," Breland said. "Failure to return the applications in a timely manner could result in future delays at getting enrolled."
Once the program goes into effect, there may be additional charges to join if the applicant was qualified when the program started.
"In many communities, volunteers will be needed to assist individuals completing the application," Breland said. "This video conference is an excellent way for Medicare beneficiaries, volunteers and representatives of various agencies to learn about the program."
For more information, contact Breland at (601) 928-5286 or by e-mail at judithb@ext.msstate.edu. Local Social Security offices and county Extension offices also can provide more information. Their numbers are listed in the government section of the phonebook.
