The Food Factor: Cinnamon Swirls
Video by Jonathan Parrish
Are you craving something sweet? These Cinnamon Swirls will hit the spot! Filled with cream cheese, cinnamon, and sugar, they’re best served warm straight from the oven. If you want to save some for later, they can be refrigerated for 1 to 2 days and reheated.
Cinnamon Swirls
Ingredients
2 slices soft-textured whole-wheat bread
2 tablespoons reduced-fat cream cheese (Neufchatel cheese) or nut butter
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon melted butter or spray butter
Directions
- Wash hands with soap and water.
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
- Trim the crusts from the bread slices.
- Spread 1 tablespoon of softened cream cheese on each bread slice.
- Roll up bread slices with cream cheese on the inside.
- Cut each roll into three equal-sized pieces (swirls).
- In a small bowl, mix together the sugar and cinnamon.
- Spray, brush, or drizzle each swirl with butter then roll into the cinnamon-sugar mixture. Do not dip swirls in the melted butter. If using melted butter, use a basting brush to brush it on or use a spoon to drizzle it on, and then sprinkle the cinnamon-sugar on each swirl.
- On an ungreased baking pan, place the swirls seam side down. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes or until light brown.
- Serve immediately or refrigerate for 1 to 2 days.
Notes: This is a great recipe to adjust to your own tastes and preferences. Try using strawberry cream cheese, or finely chopped berries to give the swirls a fruity flavor. Using spray butter instead of melted butter will lower the fat and calories.
