How to Use Pesticides Safely

Sometimes it is necessary to use a pesticide to rid your home of some uninvited guests. When using pesticides, remember to use them safely.
Regina Boykins, Extension agent in Humphreys County has a few tips on proper pesticide use.
- Use pesticides only when necessary. Make sure you’ve properly identified the pest and choose a product that will control it.
- Use only pesticides labeled for indoor use.
- Read and follow the label directions each time you use it.
The MSU Healthy Homes Initiative provides information on several topics, including integrated pest management, to help Mississippians keep their homes healthy and safe. The 12-topic curriculum is geared toward residential settings. However, it’s not just for homeowners. Others who can benefit from the trainings include child care providers, environmental health practitioners, public health nurses, housing professionals, community outreach workers, tribal environmental health officials, and leaders of community-based organizations.
