3 Tips for Healthier Eating
Video by Jonathan Parrish
I say it all the time: “The key to building a healthier life starts with healthier eating.”
While there can be many barriers to healthier eating, getting the proper nutrition is not overly complicated. Start with these basic tips to help you start and maintain a healthier diet.
Choose many different foods. Eat a variety of foods you enjoy to get the most nutrients. Try new foods and different cooking methods to avoid getting bored with the menu. And yes, your cultural foods fit.
Add more color to your plate with fruits and vegetables. These choices are an easy way to add more flavor and nutrition to your meals and snacks. It will also ensure you reduce the amount of saturated fat, sodium, and added sugar in your diet. Canned and frozen options are just as nutritious as their fresh counterparts. But check the nutrition facts label to make sure you are not getting added sugar or sodium.
Adapt healthier eating to your lifestyle and budget. Fresh, frozen, and canned options are great. A little planning and prepping can go a long way. Make a grocery list based on fruits and vegetables that are in season. They tend to be more affordable. If you grow fruits and vegetables yourself, you can learn to preserve them with research-tested methods. Contact your local MSU Extension Agent to see if canning classes are offered in your area.
Bottom line: Find what works for you. Small, consistent changes make a big difference.
