Wood Pellets
The Department of Sustainable Bioproducts is currently working with individuals and companies in Mississippi to help improve process conditions to produce high quality wood pellets economically. Wood pellets are compressed wood particles that are used as fuel. These pellets are already commonly used in some areas of the country, and in other areas, they are growing in popularity as primary fuel costs increase and concerns about global climate change build. There is a movement here in Mississippi to locate wood pellet manufacturers throughout the state so that waste wood can be utilized after trees are cut down.

Mississippi State University has both small-scale and large-scale equipment to determine how varying process conditions including die temperature, feedstock temperature, particle size distribution, and moisture content of feedstocks can help produce higher quality pellets. The department of Sustainable Bioproducts can also determine how mixing varying types of feedstocks and including additives or lubricants can help improve the wood pellet heating value and durability to more economically produce and transport wood pellets.
