Purple and Blue Salvias

It has been a really hot summer this year. Let’s look at some purple and blue salvias that are loving the summer heat. Rockin' Playin' the Blues salvia is a wonderful compact plant with beautiful blue-purple colored flowers. It is sterile, so it will not spend energy setting seed; that means it will continue to bloom all season long. As the flowers age, the sepals remain a silvery-blue-purple color after the actual flower falls off, giving the impression that the entire flower stalk remains in Bloom. Blue Suede Shoes is another salvia in the Rockin’ series. Each black-colored stem rises above the green sage-like foliage with light blue flowers with black sepals. It is also sterile and will produce beautiful flowers all summer. Because of their names, both of these salvias are perfect plant selections to use by this bust of Elvis Presley. Indigo Spires salvia is another great salvia to consider using in the landscape. It has long wavy, dusty purple stems and sepals with deep indigo, tubular flowers above ovate, dark green leaves. The flower color may appear more purple or bluer to different people. It is all in the eye of the beholder. Just like Elvis, these salvias are rockin’ in the landscape. They all love the hot summer heat. I’m Eddie Smith, and I will see you next time on Southern Gardening.
