Pansies

Are you looking for plants with old and beautiful blooms? In this week’s Southern Gardening segment, Dr. Eddie Smith looks at annual pansy plants with beautiful blooms sure to brighten up your landscape. Just because it's cold outside, it doesn't mean you can't have beautiful flowing plants in your landscape. Many varieties of pansies love the cold weather and will provide bright, colorful blooms throughout the winter and spring. The Cool Wave Violet Wing spreading pansy is a stunning plant with its vibrant purple and white blooms with yellow centers. This pansy is sure to catch the eye of anyone passing by. Another Cool Wave spreading pansy that is sure to impress is Strawberry Swirl. Strawberry Swirl pansy blooms show more of its pinkish-purple cap in cool weather, and its yellow flower face is more pronounced when the heat kicks in. One of my favorite pansies is Matrix Solar Flare. These plants are known for their colorful, vibrant, eye-catching, extra-large flowers on strong, sturdy stems. Their flowers are typically shades of yellow, orange, and red with a dark blotch in the center. Like the Cool Wave pansies, Matrix Solar Flare survives reliably through the frost in the winter and also provides early-season color in the spring. Another one of my favorites is Cats Plus Marina pansy. It is a beautiful and vibrant flowering plant that produces stunning blooms in shades of purple and blue in fall and spring. The white face of the blooms has purple cat whisker patterns and a yellow center. They are truly a beautiful variety of pansy to grow in spring and fall.
