Ferns

One of the best ways to highlight ferns is to plant them in a hanging basket or pot. Many varieties of ferns grow as a bush of green foliage, so lush that the fronds spill over the sides of the container. Raising this display up to eye level, where it can be properly admired, really is one of the best ways of showcasing their beauty. Fern baskets will thrive in our Mississippi landscapes if they are kept in partial to full shade. The Kimberly Queen fern, also known as the Sword fern, is gorgeous with both upright and sprawling growth habits. This fern has lush sword-shaped fronds. The leathery and toothed dark green foliage provides great texture. It is a great choice for our hot and humid summers. A really popular but classic plant is the Boston fern with its lush and lacey bright green foliage. The Boston fern is perhaps the most common fern for hanging baskets. The graceful and arching branches are lush with a rich green color. Living up to its name, the Macho fern is a big brawny fern that sports bright green fronds with bold broad leaves. Growing up to three feet high by three feet wide, this plant makes a statement hanging on the porch. Feed ferns every month using a water-soluble fertilizer, and they will look great all year long.
