Summary of Office

Responsible for K-12 education within the county.

Number to Be Elected

Five per county, one representing each supervisor district.

Term of Office

Elected by geographic district for a 4-year term. The general election for the office of county school board member is held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of general election years. The term of the member starts on the first Monday of January after the election.

Criteria to Run

Must be a qualified elector and reside in the district from which he/she is chosen.

Duties of Office

Boards of education have limited home rule authority. In general terms, this means they have authority to regulate the school district’s affairs, property, and finances that are not subject to state law. They have the responsibility for curriculum, personnel, buildings, and district policies.
