In 2007, timber was ranked as the second leading agricultural crop in Mississippi, next to poultry, which was valued at about $2.33 billion. Timber has consistently ranked first or second in production value in Mississippi since about 1988.

Shaun Tanger, a forestry economics specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, said the recent increase in construction costs is a demand-side phenomena.
