Youth set to serve state government
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- Four Mississippi youth were selected in February to help out for a week in the 2004 state legislature.
Beth Alexander from Newton County, Arcenio Cooke from Lee County, Drew Hearn from Leflore County and Kaitlin Lindsey from Itawamba County will serve March 15-19 in the offices of the Mississippi Speaker of the House and the Lieutenant Governor.
The youth are participating in the Legislative Page and Executive Department Internship Program offered by the Center for Governmental Training and Technology in cooperation with the 4-H Youth Development Program, part of the Mississippi State University Extension Service. Contributions from the Electric Power Association of Mississippi helped make this trip possible for the young people.
Alexander is a 10th-grader and the daughter of George and Cindy Alexander. Cooke is in the 11th grade and is the son of Letonyia and Kenneth Jernigan. Both will work with the Speaker of the House.
Hearn, the son of Corita Fields and Willie A. Hearn, is in the ninth grade. Lindsey, a high school senior, is the daughter of Randy and Tami Lindsey. They will serve in the Lieutenant Governor's office.
All four youth will have the opportunity to see in action the new governor and many new legislators. They will also meet many other pages who are serving during spring break.
