MSU invites youth to first soil science day
VERONA, Miss. -- Young people with an interest in soil science are encouraged to sign up now for a June 21 event that explores many aspects of this topic.
Mississippi State University will host its first-ever Youth Soil Science Field Day at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Center in Verona. The half-day event is designed for students ages 8-12.
Amee Bumguardner, MSU assistant professor of agronomy, is coordinating the event sponsored by the MSU Extension Service.
“This is a brand-new statewide program geared toward youth with an interest in science and growing things,” Bumguardner said. “We have designed activities and sessions to introduce them to various aspects of soil science that they may not have been introduced to so far in school.”
Students who participate will have the chance to interact with MSU scientists as they learn how the soil provides nutrients to plants, how soil is formed and how livestock impact the soil. Among the hands-on activities are painting with soil and learning how to classify soil characteristics.
There is no charge to attend this event. Register by June 19 at .
The field day begins with registration at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m. Parents and caregivers are welcome to stay with their children or pick them up when the event has ended.
