Extension hires marine fisheries specialist
BILOXI, Miss. -- Mississippi State University has hired a new marine fisheries specialist for its Coastal Research and Extension Center in Biloxi.
Marcus Drymon began his MSU Extension Service appointment Aug. 1. Before coming to MSU, he received his doctorate from the University of South Alabama Department of Marine Sciences, where he also served on the faculty.
"Marcus will be a tremendous asset in extending research-based information to both our commercial and recreational fishermen on the Gulf Coast and to fisheries managers working to maintain healthy coastal ecosystems,” said James Henderson, Coastal R&E Center head. “I am confident that we will quickly be hearing great things about Dr. Drymon from MSU clientele here on the coast.”
Drymon, who has worked in marine sciences for 17 years, said his objective is to provide applicable, science-based solutions to the problems faced by regional marine anglers, both recreational and commercial.
“Given the importance of the red snapper fishery to both recreational and commercial fishermen,” Drymon said, “the first research project I’ll pursue will be focused on evaluating the regional status of that stock in the north-central Gulf of Mexico, and providing anglers with a clear explanation of those findings.”
In addition to his doctorate, Drymon holds a bachelor’s degree in marine science from Coastal Carolina University and a master’s degree in marine biology from the College of Charleston.
