April BioBlitz events set for Jackson, Tupelo
RAYMOND, Miss. -- Students, teachers, and community members can participate in two separate interactive events to learn about their local ecosystems.
The Mississippi State University Extension Service will partner with the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, the National Park Service and the Mississippi Geographic Alliance to host the hands-on BioBlitz workshops.
The first event will be held at the museum in Jackson on April 1. It begins at 10 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m.
The second workshop will be April 22 in Tupelo near the Natchez Trace Parkway Visitor’s Center. It begins at 9:30 a.m. and ends at 4 p.m.
Participants will search for and record insects, reptiles, birds, trees, fungi and herbaceous plants. Presentations by wildlife and plant experts will help visitors learn more about local species. The free app iNaturalist is available to help individuals record their sightings.
Both events are open to all ages. Admission to the Jackson event is $6 for adults, $4 for children 3 to 18, $5 for senior citizens 60 and over, and free for children under 3. Tupelo participants are required to sign in at the visitor center located three miles north of Highway 78.
These workshops help scientists determine an area’s biodiversity.
