Levee Run Farms to host statewide field day June 17
GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Farmers can learn about free-range poultry farming, high-tunnel vegetable and flower crops, and integrated disease and pest control during the Alliance for Sustainable Agricultural Production field day June 17.
The on-farm field day will be at Levee Run Farms, located at 802 Grenada Blvd. Extended in Greenwood.
Experts with the Mississippi State University Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station will help farmers understand how to prevent, identify, monitor and manage insects, diseases and weeds.
Levee Run Farms is a third-generation family farm that raises pastured laying hens and broilers. Owner Leann Hines is adding fruit trees and expanding vegetable and cut-flower production with high tunnels. Attendees can learn about Hines’ approach to sustainability, water conservation and soil fertility improvement.
The field day is free, but preregistration is required. On-site check-in opens at 10 a.m. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m.
Partners and sponsors of the field day include the MSU Extension Service, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Alcorn State University Extension Program, University of Mississippi Transactional Law Clinic, National Center for Appropriate Technology, and Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce.
