COWART, Miss. -- Mississippi farmers can safely get rid of unusable agricultural chemicals and old tires during a free disposal event on Feb. 24 in Tallahatchie County.

Event organizers will accept insecticides, herbicides, fungicides and other pesticide products at the Cowart Gin Yard and Tallahatchie Farmers Supply located at 3990 Tippo Road between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

No rinsates, household waste pesticides or products in bulk containers will be accepted.

Tires can be dropped off at the Tallahatchie County Road Building located nearby at 4932 Highway 32 Central in Charleston between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Participants may drop off up to 10 automobile- or light-truck-sized tires and up to two tractor-sized tires for recycling.

Farmers must safely transport their waste pesticides and tires to the designated drop-off sites. Weak or leaking containers must be placed inside other sturdy, leak-proof containers.

Loads weighing more than 1,000 pounds should be marked with the appropriate placards or split into two vehicles for transport. All loads should be protected with tarps or other waterproof coverings in rainy weather.

Collected waste will be categorized, repacked and transported out of state for disposal or recycling in accordance with state and federal laws.
