Field day to address increasing farm profits
GOODMAN, Miss. -- Fruit and vegetable producers can learn how to improve profits during the Feb. 20 field day at the Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture Production Farm near Goodman.
Speakers from the Southern Sustainable Agriculture Working Group will provide information to help farmers gather the right data to make decisions that can increase profits.
Experts with the Mississippi State University Extension Service, the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station and Alcorn State University will participate and continue to provide this training for local farmers.
Presenters will use real farm examples to demonstrate useful software and documents to help farmers price products, keep records, track expenses, evaluate market channels, assess true costs, manage profits and make critical enterprise decisions.
Ellen Polishuk, an experienced Virginia vegetable grower, will show farmers how to gather data and use it to make financial decisions. The field day will also feature Jim Munsch, a long-time Wisconsin farmer and an expert on farm finance who has helped vegetable and beef producers nationwide increase profits.
Attendees will receive electronic copies of farm-friendly record-keeping templates.
The field day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. Attendance is free, but preregistration is required. Lunch and materials will be provided.
Field days are scheduled for the third Friday of each month. The last field day is set for Dec. 11.

The MSU Extension Service and Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station, Alcorn State University Extension Program and the University of Mississippi Transactional Legal Clinic produce the series, while the Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Specialty Crop Grant Program fund it.
