Garden Expo will offer 'Living on Earth' advice
MISSISSIPPI STATE – Five entertaining and educational midday programs will prepare area gardeners for the fourth annual Everything Garden Expo March 24 and 25 at the Mississippi Horse Park in Starkville.
The Starkville Area Arts Council will team up with Mississippi State University and other sponsors to present midweek programs and the area’s premier garden show.
On Monday, March 19, Alison Buehler, co-founder of Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi, will host a discussion on converting from chemical to natural gardening. On March 20, Jimmy Linley and Richard Linley of Northeast Exterminating Co. will lead a discussion on garden insects. Both programs will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Main Street Book Mart and Cafe.
On March 21, Town and Country Garden Club will host author and Southern Living consultant James Farmer as he discusses tablescapes. This program will take place from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Starkville Sportsplex on Lynn Lane.
On March 22, Daniel Wellington, the chef at The Grill, will cook from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at Thyme on Lampkin Street. Recipes will come from James Farmer’s “A Time to Plant” cookbook, and signed copies will be available.
Weekday programs conclude on March 23 at the Main Street Book Mart and Cafe after MSU entomologist Audrey Sheridan speaks from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. on gardening for bees.
Weekend show hours at the Mississippi Horse Park are 8 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, March 24, and from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 25. Admission is $5 per person, and children 6 and under are admitted free.
The event will show both hobby and professional gardeners the latest in products and growing techniques. The Expo features seminars on pecans, fire ants, gardening, tomatoes, home landscape design and renovation, rain water and soil fertility led by the region’s leading garden and horticultural authorities. About 50 vendors will be showing and selling equipment, plant materials and garden art. There will also be activities for children.
Other contributing sponsors include the MSU Extension Service, the Mississippi Horse Park, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Greater Starkville Development Partnership.
