Pruett assumes new role as CVM interim research dean
MISSISSIPPI STATE -- The new interim associate dean of Research and Graduate Studies at Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine said he plans to continue the successful programs of his predecessor.
Stephen Pruett, head of the CVM Basic Sciences Department since July, assumed his new responsibilities Feb. 25. He succeeds Jerald Ainsworth, who retired after 28 years of service.
“I want to maintain a stable, efficient office that meets the needs of our faculty and students,” Pruett said.
His new responsibilities include oversight of CVM’s annual Research Day and distribution of competitive intramural grants. He also will serve as the graduate program liaison between faculty and administration at the college.
“Dr. Pruett has a sustained record of scholarship and international recognition for his work in immunology and immune dysfunction,” Hoblet said. “His experience will further our goal of being among the elite veterinary research programs in the nation.”
A Louisiana native, Pruett earned a bachelor of science degree in microbiology from Northwestern State University of Louisiana in 1976 and a doctorate in immunology from the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport in 1980. He pursued educational opportunities in immunology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine and the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University.
Pruett has held teaching and research positions at several universities, including as acting head and professor for the Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. He held a joint appointment at MSU as professor with the veterinary college and the Department of Biological Sciences.
Pruett is a member of the American Society of Microbiology, the American Association of Immunologists and the American College of Toxicology, and president of the Society of Toxicology (immunotoxicology specialty section). He also is associate editor of the Journal of Immunology.
