Tomato Project

Are you interested in learning more about how tomoatoes grow? Or just having a fun summer project? Well then we have the perfect project for you! Participants will receive tomato plants of an heirloom varity, references on growing tomatoes, and more! And who knows, we may even have a contest for the biggest tomato! Plants will be ready in late April. More information to come.

We are missing seeing all of our 4-Hers! We have created a socially distant, outdoor SCAVENGER HUNT for our youth to participate in! This scavenger hunt can be completed during the week of February 15th through 19th. This activity will include history about Lee County 4-H and information about future programming from our office. A goodie bag will be given to each particpant upon completion. 


We will be offering a fun new Robotics/STEM activity ! Virtual meetings will be held in March in order to assist you with those kits. These activities will require a computer and an internet connection due to their virtual nature.

The cost will be $2.50 each. You can pay this fee when you pick the kits up. Call our office at 841-90100 to reserve your kits.

What's in kit #1?

Materials for FOUR activities:

  • paper plates
  • pencil/string
  • 1.5V hobby motor
  • battery holder
  • AA batteries
  • block magnet
  • copper wire
  • plastic gears
  • some other stuff

Using a combination of the 4-H Junk Drawer Robotics Curriculum and the EV3 Curriculum, you, your Extension Agent, and volunteers will work together to learn about robotics. In this kit, we will cover creating a makerspace, rotations, degrees, gears, and basic programming.

  • 1.5V hobby motor

  • Playdoh
  • LEDs
  • copper tape
  • conductive thread
  • LilyPad Coin Cell battery holder with switch

The fun keeps coming as you build on the concepts learned in kit #1 and create more complex projects. In this kit, we will primarily focus on circuits and how robots communicate.

Livestock and horse club families: Do you have empty mineral tubs that you would like to get rid of? Then we have the perfect way for you to do just that! 4-H is in need of large, empty mineral tubs. Any number would be greatly appreciated! This will assist us in a program later this spring. If you have any that you would like to donate, please call our office at 841-9000 and ask for Mrs. Laura or Ms. Mary Kathryn.

Dancing Hearts Science Experiment


  • Tall, Clear glass
  • Handful of Conversation Hearts
  • Water
  • Several Tablespoons of Baking Soda
  • 1-2 cups of White Distilled Vinegar


  1. Start by filling your glass about half full of water.
  2. Next, add 1 tablespoon of baking soda and stir. Let this sit for about 15 seconds to allow the water to become clear again.
  3. Place a handful of the conversation hearts into the glass. They should sink to the bottom.
  4. Now for the fun part! Pour your vinegar into the glass until the liquid level is near the top of the glass. (You will see the candy hearts shoot to the top and start to bubble as the baking soda and vinegar mix together and release carbon dioxide., this is a chemical reaction)
  5. Now watch as your candy hearts dance up and down due to the chemical reaction.

Note: This reaction will last about 3-5 minutes. After that point you can stir the glass to remix the baking soda at the bottom of the glass with the vinegar to restart the “dancing”.
