How to Clean Your Smartphone
Video: Michaela Parker
Smartphones and tablets are a source of germs. Most of us know to wash our hands, but when was the last time you cleaned your smartphone? Think about all the places you take your device and where you put it down. While the percentages vary, an estimated 88% of people use their phones while in the bathroom. Think about that. How can you get the germs off your smartphone or tablet? Easy.
Here are some general steps to follow. Given the number of variables with device materials, cases, and screen protectors, be sure to follow the instructions provided by your phone’s manufacturer.
- Wash your hands before you pick it up. Since that is not always feasible, try the following:
- Make sure it is charged and unplugged from a power source. Turn the device off. Get a micro-fiber (soft) cloth and make a warm soapy mixture of water and dishwashing soap. 2-3 drops of soap in a cup of warm water should be plenty. Lightly dampen the microfiber cloth with the soapy water. Squeeze out any excess. Gently wipe down your smartphone. Do not get any moisture in the ports (openings) of your phone!
- Be sure the phone is completely dry before turning it back on or re-attaching to a power source.
- Clean your phone once a week, or as needed, if you have been traveling or around others who might be sick.
When it comes to cleaning your phone, don’t do the following:
- Do not use an excessive amount of water – it can permanently damage your phone.
- Do not use window cleaner, sanitizing/alcohol wipes, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, or paper towels on the display of your device. Smartphones and tablet displays are coated with a protective film that helps with glare and fingerprints. Using any of the items above can remove that protective film and leave you with a streaky display.
Cleaning other items that have a high-touch factor such as keyboards and mice are a little easier. Unplug them from the computer. Lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and run it over the keyboard or mouse. Allow them to dry completely. Re-connect the keyboard and mouse and turn on the computer. Keeping your devices germ-free can make for a healthier you.
