A group of plants that I don’t think gets enough attention are those that love to grow in the shade to partial shade. They’re not as flashy as those colorful annuals but still are outstanding landscape plants. 

The month of April means it’s time to transplant those tomato seedlings that we’ve started and grown over the last few weeks. Let me share some tips on when and how I do this. 

I’m a committed container grower and almost everything in my home garden is grown in some kind of container. I believe there are advantages that are beneficial to the home gardener.

 

If you like beautiful and reliable flowering plants in your summer garden take a look at salvia. There are annual and perennial varieties to choose from, so you can’t’ go wrong with salvia in your landscape. 

Some gardeners think geraniums are old fashioned flowering plants. Today Southern Gardening is at Rivers Greenhouse and Garden and these plants are certainly not your grandma’s geraniums. 

I think one of the classic summer plants for our Mississippi gardens has to be bougainvillea. This tropical plant is perfect for a hanging basket or container on the porch and patio.

Columbine are one of my favorite spring plants with their interesting flowers and makes the perfect addition to any garden or landscape. 

A common crime against horticulture is the crape myrtle pruning practice called crape murder. Now I’ve started using the term crapmyrtilation since the tree doesn’t actually die. Let me demonstrate how to correctly prune a crape myrtle.
