MSU offers three-day row crop short course (2001)
MISSISSIPPI STATE – A three-day short course in early December will give Mississippi cotton, soybean and corn producers valuable information about how to succeed in agriculture.
Registration for the Dec. 5-7 Row Crop Short Course is free until Nov. 25 and $40 a person after that. The event is hosted by Mississippi State University’s Extension Service and will be held on campus in the Bost Extension Center.
The first day will focus on insect issues related to management and yields. The second day will focus largely on fertility management and optimizing production. Topics on the third day will include activation of herbicides with irrigation, seeding rates, bacterial blight, grain sorghum, the Farm Bill and current commodity markets.
“Our attendance numbers indicate that producers appreciate having an intense, three-day short course that covers the primary row crops grown in Mississippi,” said Darrin Dodds, event organizer and Extension cotton specialist. “More than 300 people attended last year’s event.”
A full schedule is planned for Monday and Tuesday, and a half-day is planned for Wednesday.
A total of 18 Certified Crop Adviser continuing education credits will be available in pest management, crop management, nutrient management, soil and water management, and professional development. Consultant’s license renewals are available in entomology, plant pathology and weed control. Pesticide applicators can earn Category 1A and 10 recertification.
The Mississippi Corn Promotion Board, Mississippi Soybean Promotion Board, Cotton Incorporated Mississippi State Support Committee and numerous private industries sponsor this educational event. Those preregistered will be served a free lunch Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as a hog roast at the Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station Conference Center on the evening of Dec. 5 and a steak and shrimp dinner Dec. 6 at the Starkville Country Club.
