March News 

Robotics Club

The Robotics Club will not meet this month due to spring break. The next scheduled meeting wil be Monday, April 13th at the Lowndes County Extension Office at 6:00 p.m.

Clover Buds Meeting

There will be a Clover Bud meeting here at the Extension office on Thursday, March 19th at 4:00 p.m. We will be continuing our 4-H Lego Activities. Clover Bud is for youth 4-H ages 5-7.

Jr. Council Meeting

Our next Jr. Council meeting will be Thursday, March 26th at 5:30 p.m. We are looking for youth 4-H ages 10-18, who would like to learn about running a meeting and becoming Ambassadors of Lowndes County. 

This group will also aid the 4-H agent in community opportunities and events held in the county. If you are interested, please come to the meeting.

Jr. Master Gardener Meeting

We are excited about our new Jr. Master Gardener Club. Our first meeting was a success. The next meeting will be on March 9th at the Lowndes County Extension Office at 4:30 p.m.

Project Achievement Day & Club Congress Interest Meeting

If you are interested in attending 2020 4-H Congres or Project Achievement Day, please come to the interest meeting on Wednesday , March 11, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lowndes County Extension Office. Be thinking about the projects in which you would like to participate. 

4-H Lego Engineering Week

During the week of spring break (March 9-13), Lowndes County 4-H will offer a 4-H Lego Engineering Activity Week to the first 20 youth ages 5-7 that sign up. This will consist of 5 one hour lessons that will begin at 10:00am each day. If you are interested, please call the Lowndes County Extension office for more details.

Hello, my name is Darrell Banks and I am your new 4-H agent. I’m super excited to be a part of the Lowndes County Extension and to serve Lowndes County 4-H. I am ready to make an impact in any way that I can. I look forward to providing developmental opportunities for the youth and help them prepare for their future.

4-H S.A.F.E.T.Y News

The Lowndes County 4-H S.A.F.E.T.Y program has been busy practicing since late January preparing youth for the numerous competitions during March & April. This year we have 92 youth competing in all disciplines offered through 4-H. Thank you to our numerous certified coaches for your dedication & hard work to the youth in our county!

The Alcorn Invitational will be held March 21st just outside of Corinth and the Lowndes County Invitational will be held on March 28th at the McCullough Range in Caledonia. Sign in will begin at 7:00a.m. and live fire will commence at 8:15a.m. for both of these competitions.

April 25th - NE Regional - Remember to bring firearms/bows cased and ammunition separate from firearms. For more info on this competition watch your email’s and our Facebook posts for updates.

4-H Horse News

2020 4-H Horse Show Rule Books are ordered and should be in the first week in April. Entry forms are in for pickup at the E.S. Office. All entry forms and grade forms need to be turned in before Friday, April 17th to compete in the riding events at the NE & State 4-H Horse Shows during June. Horse ownership is May 1st.

NE Regional Show will be held June 11th-13th

Lowndes County Horse Park May 16th - Plans are in the works to host a Lowndes County Horse Park Open Show for 4-H youth and adults. More information will be provided as we get closer to this show.

2020 Poultry Chain

The deadline for ordering chicks through the Lowndes 4-H Office is Wednesday, March 18th - Call the Lowndes E.S. for more details and/or to sign up & pay for birds. Participants may only show in one category and all birds shown MUST be the same kind. We will only order female chicks.

We recommend ordering 20 but less may be purchased. Just remember, you will have less to select from for competition. Must show at least 3 at county and state shows.
2 categories to compete in - each participant can only choose one category - either Meat or Layer.

  • Meat category: Any American Breed (Plymouth Rocks, Dominiques, Wyandottes, Javas, Rhode Islands, Chantecler, Jersey Giants, Lamona, New Hamshires, Hollands, Delawares, Buckeyes)
  • Layer category: Any Mediterranean Breed (Leghorns, Minorcas, White Faced Black Spanish, Andalusians, Anconas, Sicilian Buttercups, Catalanas).

Any participant is eligible to show at State Fair.

Participants will be judged on live birds (3 brought to fair) and a record book. Half of the overall score is from each of these sections. You may show birds without competing in showmanship. A fourth bird may be selected and brought separate for the showmanship category, however, this bird MUST be selected out of birds purchased for the 2020 poultry chain project.

  •  March 18th - Deadline to order Poultry Chain Chicks. (Ext. Office)
  •  March 21st - Northeast Invitational Competition - Alcorn
  • March 28th - Lowndes County Golden Triangle Regional Competition - Caledonia
  • April 17th - Deadline to sign up for NE Regional Horse Show
  • April 25th - NE Regional 4-H Safety Competition - West Point/Starkville
