One of the most popular activities in the Mississippi 4-H youth development program is 4-H Shooting Sports, and slingshot, its newest discipline, is engaging even more young people in the safety-based program.
The 2023 4-H Day at the Fair, held annually at the Mississippi State Fair each October, hosted hundreds of Mississippi 4-H’ers at the Jackson fairgrounds. 4-H’ers participated in beef, pork, poultry, and omelet cooking competitions.

These young people enjoyed showing off the essential skill of cooking! By developing their culinary skills and nutritional knowledge, these 4-H’ers are learning STEAM skills, short for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. 4-H STEAM teaches children to explore what’s possible and how to respond to real-world challenges.
Smith County
Forestry and forest products are a major component of Smith County’s economy. Forest-related economic sectors generate value not only within the forest-related sectors but also in other sectors of the economy. The economic contributions of forest-related sectors and their contributions on other sectors can be estimated using input-output analysis. Using 2018 data, this study estimates the total economic contributions of forestry and the forest products industry to Smith County, Mississippi.
Mississippi 4-H Introduces New Youth Leadership Positions
Administrators with the Mississippi State University Extension Center for 4-H Youth Development recently announced two new offices for 4-H’ers: president-elect and past president. These new positions will allow the 4-H’ers more training and opportunities, state leaders agree.
