I’ve always liked the look of white picket fences in the yard. Let’s take a look how my friend Barbara has used her picket fence to show off her front garden. It’s pretty easy see how fantastic the front garden bed is in front of the white picket fence. These orange Sunpatiens can’t be beat for easy care and non-stop color; aside from consistent watering they’re virtually maintenance free. With our warm night temperatures they grow strongly, so step back and enjoy. Cuban Gold Duranta is a pleasant sight, where its sunny bright colors are always welcome.
Did you know that Southern Gardening has its own Facebook page? That's right and it delivers great garden and plant information. For example, during the last week of June, a very rare horticultural event took place right here in Mississippi, and we covered it on the Southern Gardening Facebook page. A titan arum plant, which is native to Sumatra, bloomed at the South Mississippi Branch Experiment Station in Poplarville. Titan arum, this one was nicknamed Spike, has the distinction of producing the largest inflorescence, made up of many, many individual flowers, in the plant world.
Happy Birthday, Southern Gardening! Did you know that Southern Gardening is 20 years old this month? That’s right….it started in 1996 with host Norman Winter. And then, 6 years ago, I stepped in as the host. Sit back and enjoy some highlights of the shows over the years. While here in the South, we think of grass as something for the cows to eat. Watch as your neighbor rakes and bags his pine straw for garbage pickup. And then sneak out in the early morning and raid it for your yard. Many of you football fans probably think the word "pansy" means kind of wimpy.
