About Magnolia Moves

The program meets you where you are—both in terms of physical location and your current fitness level. 

Magnolia Moves Activity Challenge welcomes both individuals and teams to participate. A person of any age can benefit from establishing and achieving activity and nutrition goals. To be part of the program, participants can walk, run, bike, swim, exercise, or engage in any type of physical activity at their homes or other locations.

Sign up now by creating a free MoveSpring account. You’ll receive an email with a link to sign up for the MoveSpring app that will be used to track your activity. No app, no worries… there is a desktop version that is available.

If you live or work in Mississippi, your local MSU Extension agent can assist you with implementation.

Individuals or Teams Can Participate

Whether you're just getting started or looking to stay motivated, Magnolia Moves Activity Challenge provides the tools and support to help you succeed.

Individuals or Teams Can Participate:

  • Small Teams: 3–7 members
  • Mid-Size Teams: 8–15 members
  • Large Teams: 16 or more members

Individuals who prefer not to form a team can join on the MoveSpring app and still fully participate in the challenge.

Program Breakdown

Age Ranges for the Competition:

  • 13 – 19 years
  • 20 – 34 years
  • 35 – 45 years
  • 50 – 64 years
  • 65 years +

Each week, winners from each age group will be drawn randomly from the following weekly step totals (who have completed 45,000 STEPS or more) during the previous week for prizes. 

The top 3 teams will be announced Tuesday morning of each week.

End of Challenge Prizes

The top 3 steppers from each age group will be recognized.

Top 3 teams will be recognized.

All participants will be given a certificate of completion with their total mileage/step count that is signed by MSU President Dr. Mark Keenum and MSU Extension Director Dr. Angus Catchot.

Program Goals

Physical Activity (Walking) Goals

  1. Increase daily movement by exercising at least 30 minutes, 5 days per week.
  2. Gradually increase step count, aiming for 5,000–10,000 steps per day.
  3. Improve cardiovascular health through consistent moderate-intensity activities.
  4. Build endurance and stamina by increasing activities over time.
  5. Reduce sedentary behavior by incorporating short activity breaks throughout the day.
  6. Develop a sustainable exercise habit that continues beyond the program.

Healthy Eating Goals

  1. Increase fruit and vegetable intake to at least 5 servings per day.
  2. Choose whole grains instead of refined grains whenever possible.
  3. Reduce consumption of processed foods, added sugars, and sugary beverages.
  4. Increase water intake to support hydration and overall health.
  5. Practice portion control and mindful eating habits.
  6. Plan balanced meals that include lean protein, healthy fats, and fiber-rich foods.
