Forestry Income Tax Series: Frequently Asked Questions about Timber Casualty Losses

Timber owners often have questions about how unexpected losses affect their property and taxes. This publication provides frequently asked questions about timber casualty losses and related tax rules. It is based on the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) and is accurate under that law as of July 2025. Casualty losses are sudden, unexpected, and unusual events, such as hurricanes, floods, wildfires, or other disasters, and may be deductible up to the basis in the timber. Normal tree deaths from disease, insects, or gradual causes are not considered casualty losses.
Landowners, including businesses, investors, and hobby owners, may claim deductions using IRS forms such as Form 4684 and Form T, depending on ownership type and use of timber. Documentation such as photos, appraisals, and accounting records is required. Losses may be offset by the timber basis, and replacement of timber or reinvestment of salvage proceeds can affect taxation. Special rules apply for presidentially or state-declared disasters, and Mississippi follows federal rules for casualty loss reporting.
This publication also explains timber basis, how to determine initial and adjusted basis for purchased, inherited, or gifted timber, and how deductions interact with ordinary income and capital gains.
