All market steers, commercial beef heifers, market lambs, market hair sheep, commercial meat goat does, wether dams, market hogs, and market goats MUST BE validated (EID scan and DNA tissue sample collected) to show at the 2021 Mississippi State Fair and 2022 District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows during the week of September 13-16, 2021. During the validation period, steers, commercial beef heifers, and market hair sheep will be classified as well. See the locations and times below. Make your exhibitors aware of these locations and dates so they can make plans to get their animals processed.

  • Monday, September 13: Hattiesburg – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Tuesday, September 14: Raymond – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Wednesday, September 15: Greenwood – 8:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M.; Senatobia – 2:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
  • Thursday, September 16: Verona – 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon

For the 2022 District/DNJR shows, all market hogs, commercial gilts, and MS Bred Barrows must be owned and entered by December 1 and MUST BE validated at the locations and times below. All market hogs and commercial gilts will be classified at the 2022 DNJR as listed on the schedule above. For newly entered commercial beef heifers, wether dams, and commercial meat goat does that were not processed in September, but were entered by December 1, these animals MUST BE validated, and the commercial beef heifers will also be classified at the same time to show at the 2022 District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows during the week of December 13-16, 2021. See the locations and times below. Make your exhibitors aware of these locations and dates so they can make plans to get their animals processed.

  • Monday, December 13: Hattiesburg – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Tuesday, December 14: Raymond – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.
  • Wednesday, December 15: Greenwood – 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

State Fair Reminders and Information

REMINDER: NEW 4-H/FFA MEMBERS MUST BE ETHICS CERTIFIED TO SHOW!!
The Mississippi State Fair will be here soon and the Mississippi Livestock Quality Assurance training for NEW exhibitors and parents or guardians must be completed by October 1, 2021. Code of Conduct Forms are available as an Extension publication.

OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE – REMINDER
An Official Health Certificate with each animal identified will be required on all livestock showing at the 2021 Mississippi State Fair. This includes all market animals, beef breeding cattle, commercial beef heifers, dairy cattle (purebred and commercial dairy heifers), dairy goats (purebred and commercial), commercial breeding ewes, and commercial meat goat does.

MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR PREMIUM BOOKS
Each county will receive 2 Mississippi State Fair Premium Books in the county packet as soon as they are available. A PDF file of the premium book will also be sent by email and posted on the MSU Extension website under the link for Livestock and then Youth Livestock. Please make sure your exhibitors and parents have a copy of the rules for the shows in which they participate. A copy of the schedule of events is included in this newsletter.

DAIRY SWEETHEART, MEAT GOAT PRINCESS, AND LAMB PRINCESS CONTESTS
A Junior and Senior Dairy Cattle Sweetheart, a Junior and Senior Dairy Goat Sweetheart, a Junior and Senior Meat Goat Princess, and a Junior and Senior Lamb Process will be announced during the Mississippi State Fair. Winners will be selected based on poise, beauty, personality, and knowledge of their project. Rules and regulations concerning the contest are found in the Mississippi State Fair premium book. Please have the entries postmarked by September 3, 2021. All interviews are planned to take place before the State Fair. Please encourage your girls enrolled in dairy, goat, and lamb projects to enter this year.

COMMERCIAL HEIFER AND MARKET STEER EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors that are exhibiting steers and commercial beef and dairy heifers about horns. All commercial heifers and steers showing at the Mississippi State Fair and District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows must be polled or dehorned with no scurs or re-growth to exceed 1½ inches above the skin line. Remember the minimum weight on commercial heifers is 500 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their commercial heifers and market steers and declaring their animal’s show weight in the online check-in app. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

MARKET GOAT EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors who are exhibiting market goats about horns. Goats may be shown that are polled, dehorned, or disbudded with no re-growth to exceed 1½” above the skin line. Removal of horns is not allowed on the show grounds. Remember the minimum weight of market goats is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their market goats and declaring their animal’s show weight in the check-in app. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

COMMERCIAL MEAT GOAT DOE SHOW EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of commercial meat goat does is 40 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their commercial meat goat does and declaring their animal’s show weight in the check-in app. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

MARKET LAMB AND MARKET HAIR SHEEP EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of market lambs and market hair sheep is 70 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their market lambs and market hair sheep and declaring their animal’s show weight in the check-in app. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

WETHER DAM EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of wether dams is 75 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their wether dams and declaring their animal’s show weight in the check-in app. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

MARKET HOG EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of market hogs is 200 pounds with no maximum weight for the Mississippi State Fair. ALL exhibitors are responsible for weighing their market hogs and declaring their animal’s show weight in the check-in app. Official scales will be made available for weighing livestock.

COMMERCIAL DAIRY HEIFER EXHIBITORS – SPECIAL NOTICE!
Remember the minimum weight of commercial dairy heifers is 200 pounds for the Mississippi State Fair. 2021 Mississippi 4-H Horse Championship

The 2021 Mississippi 4-H Horse Championship was an outstanding event! The show ran extremely smooth, and this is due to the fine work and cooperation of many, many people. We want to express our appreciation to all exhibitors, parents, volunteers, leaders, agents, and specialists for their excellent cooperation and interest in the 4-H horse program. We especially appreciate the Extension Agents/Program Associates and volunteers for working at the show and admire their dedication to seeing that the show is run in the best way possible. Of course, the work starts with the county programs and Extension Agents/Program Associates are to be commended for their support of this program.

2021 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship

The 2021 Southern Regional 4-H Horse Championship was held in Perry, GA. Our 4-H’ers represented our state well and they are to be commended for their success. Thanks for all the help that parents, volunteers, and agents provided! Mississippi’s 2021 Regional Horse Show exhibitor information is in the attached PDF.

Regional qualifying horses from each district:

District and State Horse Show Meetings

Thanks to everyone who helped at the 2021 District and State 4-H Horse Championships. We are now gearing up for the 2021 Mississippi State Fair in October and the 2022 District and Dixie National Junior Round-Up Livestock Shows in January and February.

Coming up over the next month will be the District and State 4-H Horse Show Meetings. I encourage all counties to participate in their respective meeting and hope that all decisions made will lead to successful shows next year.

The date and time for the District and State 4-H Horse Show Meetings are below.

  • SW District Horse Show Meeting: Monday, August 9, 2021, starting at 6:00 P.M. at the Central Mississippi Research and Extension Building in Raymond

  • SE District Horse Show Meeting: Tuesday, August 24, 2021, starting at 6:00 P.M. at the Forrest County Extension Office in Hattiesburg

  • NE District Horse Show Meeting: Tuesday, August 24, 2021, starting at 6:00 P.M. at the North Mississippi Research and Extension Building in Verona

  • NW District Horse Show Meeting: Thursday, August 26, 2021, starting at 6:00 P.M. at the Grenada County Extension Office in Grenada

  • State 4-H Horse Show Meeting: Tuesday, September 21, 2021, starting at 5:00 P.M. on the campus of Mississippi State University in Starkville. The meeting will take place in the Atrium between the new ADS and Poultry Buildings.

  • 2022 Mississippi 4-H Horse Educational Contests

    • Horse Bowl – Saturday, February 19 during the DNQH Show in Jackson
    • Plan to hold remaining horse educational contests on a weekend in March in Starkville
      • Hippology Exam, Stations, Slides and Team Problem on a Friday evening
      • Horse Judging and Judging Phase of Hippology on the next day (Saturday morning)
      • Horse Communications Contests on Saturday afternoon
  • 2022 Mississippi 4-H Horse Championship – Jackson, MS – Wednesday, June 22 to Saturday, June 25
