MSU Extension Head Start begins program year

Mississippi State University Extension Head Start is welcoming children and families it serves along the Mississippi Gulf Coast back for another year of learning, growth and connection.

The start of the new program year marks MSU Extension Head Start’s seventh year of serving families in Harrison County and its second year of expanding services into Hancock County. Through early childhood education, health and developmental services, family engagement and individualized support, the program works alongside parents to help children build a strong foundation for lifelong success.

“We are beginning this year with so much positivity and excitement about the opportunities ahead,” said Jamila Taylor, executive director of MSU Extension Early Childhood Programs. “As we celebrate eight years of service in Harrison County and continue growing our presence in Hancock County, we remain focused on building meaningful relationships with families and communities. Every new school year gives us another opportunity to help children thrive, support parents and make a lasting impact.”

In Harrison County, Head Start and Early Head Start services are provided through stand-alone centers and partnerships with local school districts and community organizations. These collaborations allow the program to reach children and families across the county while connecting them with comprehensive resources tailored to their needs.

In Hancock County, the program has established Head Start Pre-K classrooms in partnership with the Hancock County School District and continues working to prepare services for the program’s remaining funded enrollment.

While additional center-based facilities are being established, eligible children may temporarily receive services in their homes through the Home-Based Program Option. Families participating in this option will receive regular home visits focused on child development, early learning and school readiness, along with group socialization experiences. 

Staff will work closely with parents to provide individualized activities, guidance and resources that support each child’s growth and prepare them for a successful transition into a classroom.

Throughout the year, children will engage in developmentally appropriate learning experiences designed to strengthen their social and emotional learning, language, literacy, mathematics and physical development.

Families will also have opportunities to participate in program activities, connect with community resources and work with staff to establish goals for their children and households.

MSU Extension Head Start provides comprehensive early childhood education and family support services to eligible children and families in Harrison and Hancock counties. The program is committed to promoting school readiness, strengthening families and supporting children as they learn, grow and prepare for future success.
