Easy Ways to Start Recycling

Video by Michaela Parker

At the beginning of a new year, everyone makes goals and resolutions to keep throughout the coming months. If you want to make more eco-friendly decisions, here are a few tips to help you become intentional with recycling.

  1. If you are fortunate to have curbside recycling or drop off locations in your community, take advantage of the opportunity! Be sure to check when recycling is picked up and where drop off sites are.
  2. Know what can’t be recycled. Batteries, electronics, plastic bags, clothing, garden hoses, electrical cords, medical waste, and yard waste are all examples of items not to be placed in recycling bins. Each recycling program is different. Do research before you start recycling to see what your local program accepts. Many large retail stores provide collection bins for batteries and plastic wraps and films. Check to see if your local retail store offers recycling services.
  3. Make it as easy as possible to recycle by placing a recycling bin right next to a trash can. This simple act makes it just as easy to recycle as it would be to throw something in the trash can!
  4. Reduce and reuse items as much as possible. Try to avoid single use items like zip lock bags, drink bottles, plastic straws, and disposable cutlery. This simple act significantly helps decrease the amount of waste we produce.

Taking on a recycling lifestyle can be intimidating. Just remember, you don’t have to jump in headfirst. Start simple to ensure you are able to make changes you will be able to continue. As you grow more confident, gradually add more changes.

Starting off the new year and decade with the midset to improve our planet is a great goal! Recycle and make a difference!
