Three Tips for Pet Food Safety

My pets are part of the family, and I want them to have a healthy diet. There are many choices when it comes to what to feed your pet, and I always discuss this with my veterinarian when I add a pet to the family and at each pet’s check-up.

But no matter what you choose to feed your pet, food safety is important. Did you know that your pet’s food can make you and your family sick?

Pet food and treats can contain dangerous bacteria, such as salmonella, that can make humans sick. So, always follow these tips when it comes to feeding your pets.

• Always wash your hands before and after feeding your pets.
• Store pet foods in a separate area than human foods.
• Use a dedicated scoop, spoon or cup to dispense pets’ foods.
• Follow the storage directions on the pet food container.
• Keep young children away from the area where your pets eat and don’t allow them to touch pet food or treats.
