GULFPORT, MISS. -- Mississippi State University Extension Head Start–Early Head Start is expanding its commitment to child and family wellness with the launch of the Yum Box Family Engagement Initiative, made possible through one-time supplemental nutrition funding from the Office of Head Start.

Designed to strengthen healthy habits at home while deepening family engagement, Yum Box is a monthly, subscription-style program that delivers hands-on nutrition resources directly to enrolled families. The initiative connects classroom learning with real-life experiences in the home.

Each Yum Box includes practical tools to make healthy eating approachable and engaging. Families receive kid-friendly, nutrient-dense recipes using affordable ingredients, along with tips to help navigate picky eating in positive, low-stress ways. Interactive nutrition activities encourage children to explore new foods while reinforcing concepts introduced in the classroom.

In addition to educational materials, boxes include fun kitchen tools, such as child-safe utensils and measuring cups, designed to involve children in meal preparation. Families also gain access to valuable community resources, including fresh produce, food bank information and invitations to free cooking classes.

The initiative reflects a strong emphasis on family leadership and community collaboration. Parent committee members have helped assemble the Yum Boxes, creating meaningful opportunities for engagement and ownership. Local businesses, grocery stores and farms are also invited to contribute, ensuring the program remains rooted in community partnerships.

By leveraging supplemental federal funding, MSU Extension Head Start–Early Head Start is enhancing its nutrition services in a way that is both innovative and sustainable, directly supporting improved dietary habits among children and families -- particularly increasing the consumption of fruits, vegetables and whole grains.

“Yum Box creates intentional moments where families learn, connect and grow together,” said Mandy Vargas, project coordinator for the program’s partnership with Shine Early Learning. “It reflects our commitment at MSU Head Start to provide quality services and enriching experiences that truly make a difference.

Through Yum Box, MSU Extension is helping families build healthy habits, strengthen school readiness and create lasting memories, Vargas said.

“Every smile we see when a box is received reminds us this work is making a real impact,” Vargas said.

The Yum Box initiative aligns closely with Head Start’s mission to promote child health, family well-being and school readiness. By combining nutrition education, hands-on learning and community support, the program represents a meaningful investment in the long-term success of children and families.
