STARKVILLE, Miss. -- Mississippi State University Extension Head Start is excited to announce that it will increase opportunities for children and families to access high-quality Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Hancock County.

“We are thrilled to bring these services to Hancock County,” said Jamila Taylor, Executive Director of Early Childhood Extension Programs. “This expansion reflects our commitment to ensuring children and families across Mississippi have the resources, education and support they need to thrive. By working together with families, schools and communities, we are building strong foundations for lifelong learning and success.”

MSU Extension Head Start was recently awarded the Hancock County service area through a competitive federal grant cycle. While the Hancock County service area remains under the oversight of another agency, MSU Extension Head Start will work diligently to ensure a smooth, supportive transition for families and a seamless enrollment process as services expand.

As part of this expansion, MSU Extension Head Start will operate a stand-alone site in Bay Waveland, with the anticipated date for serving children to be announced soon. The Bay Waveland center will have three Early Head Start classrooms and one Head Start classroom.

In addition, a new collaboration with the Hancock County School District will integrate four Pre-K classrooms within West Hancock Elementary, East Hancock Elementary and Hancock North Central Elementary schools. This partnership will create 80 slots for children, further strengthening access to comprehensive early education and family support.

Leaders in the Hancock County School District also shared their excitement about the partnership.

“We are proud to collaborate with MSU Extension Head Start to expand access to quality early learning opportunities for our youngest learners,” said Kim Saucier, chief academic officer. “Integrating Pre-K classrooms into our schools not only strengthens school readiness but also builds a seamless transition for children as they grow within our district.”

MSU Extension Head Start will continue serving families in Harrison County, where the program has built a strong foundation of educational and family engagement services. The addition of Hancock County allows the program to expand its reach while maintaining its dedication to providing individualized, high-quality services.

Family interest meetings and job fairs will be scheduled soon to provide more details about enrollment opportunities and available career positions within the program.
