Extension Matters Volume 11 Issue 2 Cover
  • Arcs of water flowing from a polypipe and into furrows of soybeans.

    What’s New in Extension

With more than 1,000 farms irrigated across six Mississippi Delta counties—Bolivar, Coahoma, Humphreys, Leflore, Sunflower, and Washington—almost 1.7 million farming acres are impacted by irrigation decisions and technologies.

  • Four people standing outside, hands in their pockets.

    Rewarding Excellence

Every year, 4-H’ers and FFA members who show livestock have their sights set on the Dixie National Sale of Junior Champions.

  • Standing in a soybean field, a person gestures toward another person.

    Starting Early

Allendale Planting Company in the Mississippi Delta town of Shelby has flourished under Bill O’Neal’s watchful eye for more than a quarter century, but he will be the first to say you can never have too much experience to learn something new.

  • A woman reads to one child on her lap while another walks nearby.

    Lasting Legacy

Approximately one year has passed since the children of Mississippi and those who educate and care for them lost an advocate and champion when Dr. Louise Davis died July 10, 2024.

  • Four people wearing suits and talking.

    Director’s Message

We’re in a busy time of year, and I wanted to share a few of the great things we are doing this summer in MSU Extension.

  • A smiling person walking on a treadmill.

    Walking the Walk

When it comes to losing weight, people need proven, reliable solutions. For Henry “Eddie” Robbins of Simpson County, Walk-a-Weigh offers that answer.

  • A smiling child wearing a green shirt and standing in a kitchen.

    Learning Without Boundaries

Lucy Haskins placed third in the Dixie National Crepe Cook-off, she hit a bullseye in a county archery contest, and she is beyond ready to go to the next level competing in 4-H.

  • Three teens sing on stage, with the central performer seated in a wheelchair. Large, illuminated letters, arranged to form the words “Beyond Ready,” are in the background.

    Beyond Ready

Hundreds of Mississippi 4-H’ers gathered at the Mississippi State University campus in late May for the 2025 Mississippi 4-H Club Congress.
