Description
Are you interested in learning floral design? This comprehensive educational program offers a thorough overview of floral design, beginning with the fundamentals that make a floral design visually appealing. This course marks the beginning of the first of three phases required to earn the Extension Master Floral Designer certificate.
In Phase I, you will gain access to a new series of videos, comprising over 53 units (5-45 minutes in duration), made available to you within our Extension learning platform. These lively programs cover all the essential topics in floral design. Phase I provides the foundation for understanding floral design principles and mechanics, including the techniques and elements that hold floral designs together. If you desire, you can follow along with the Phase I video demonstrations to create your floral designs, but this is not required.
At the end of this course, you will be ready to enroll in the program's second phase, where you will create all the basic floral designs through hands-on classes directly with your on-site instructor, in person. During that time, you will learn how to make a bow, corsages, a handtied bouquet, symmetrical and asymmetrical designs, topiary, and more. You can register for a Phase II session upon successful completion of Phase I.
The final phase of the training program requires completing 40 hours of Extension volunteering, putting what you learned into action. This service component can involve various non-profit activities, such as creating educational displays for the public, providing floral programmatic assistance, and many others. Successful completion of 40 approved volunteer hours is required to earn the Master Floral Designer certificate, but it is not mandatory for those seeking training only. Volunteer reports are due to your Phase II instructor at the end of the year. After completing the certificate program, Master Floral Designers are encouraged to maintain active status by participating in 20 hours of education and/or volunteering each year.
Participants are directed to follow the program numerically, from Phase I through Phase III. Some may choose to complete Phase I or both Phase I and Phase II, finding that these fulfill their educational needs. We encourage participants to complete all three Phases to earn the certificate. The MFD Program is open to beginners and assumes little to no previous floral design experience.
- Phase I, online.
- Phase II: Studio course, hands-on. You must complete the first phase before registration.
- Phase III, volunteering. Must complete the second phase, a hands-on course, prior to initiating volunteer hours to earn the certificate.
Please note that at the end of the Phase I course, the educational videos are no longer accessible.
