What is the Master Naturalist Program?

If you’re passionate about conservation and the natural resources of our state, the Mississippi Master Naturalist program may be a good opportunity for you.

The mission of the Master Naturalist program is to organize knowledgeable volunteers to promote conservation and natural resources management. The program aims to improve understanding, develop knowledge, and enhance education. Through these efforts, program leaders are creating a trained volunteer network to support conservation in Mississippi.

This program is a great fit for adults interested in nature who want to give back to their communities.

To become a Master Naturalist, you must:

  • Register for a basic course nearest to you.
  • Complete the 40-hour basic course (field and classroom instruction).
  • Complete eight advanced training hours annually.
  • Complete 40 hours of volunteer service annually.

You’ll probably recognize some of the projects that got their start through the program’s volunteers and leaders: the South Mississippi Hiking Trails, the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup, and Monarch Monitoring, just to name a few.

Master Naturalists have plenty of opportunities to make a difference!
