Volunteer with Extension!

As a new year begins, many people are looking for ways to make a positive difference in our communities. Did you know MSU Extension has a variety of volunteer opportunities? Extension has a strong presence in local communities and is known for making an impact right at home. The best news? We have something for everyone! Here are just a few opportunities for you to get involved and make an impact in your own community:

  • 4-H: If you want to invest in Mississippi’s young people, 4-H is for you. Our volunteers are the backbone of what makes the 4-H youth development program so successful. Having people who provide guidance, support, and encouragement to 4-H’ers makes a huge impact. There are a variety of areas and roles you can get plugged into. For more info, you can check out these general volunteer FAQs.
  • Master Gardeners: Got a green thumb? We’ve got the perfect spot for you! Being a Master Gardener is a great way to use your love for gardening to give back to your community. Come with a desire to learn, help others, and connect with fellow gardeners. It’s a volunteer opportunity you’re sure to enjoy! More info can be found on our Master Gardener volunteer website.
  • Master Naturalists: Joining the Master Naturalist program is a great way to deepen your understanding of the great outdoors! By volunteering with the program, you’ll receive research-based training about Mississippi’s natural resources and share your knowledge on ways to make a local impact through community conservation efforts. Connect with the Master Naturalist Program by checking out their website!
  • Equine Assisted Therapy: We’ve got a unique opportunity for you if you like horses and you’re local to the Starkville area. The Equine Assisted Therapy Program uses horses to provide physical, emotional, and psychological benefits to those with disabilities. It’s an incredibly rewarding program to volunteer with. If interested, contact Lori Irvin, Extension associate and volunteer coordinator.
  • Junior Master Wellness: If your teen is interested in health and wellness, we have a great volunteer opportunity for them! The Junior Master Wellness Volunteer Program is geared toward students ages 14–18 who are interested in leadership and advocacy for making healthy lifestyle choices. This is a great program to be a part of if interested in a medical vocation. View additional resources about this program by checking out their website

Extension offers a wide variety of opportunities to get plugged into your local community and make an instant impact. A quick phone call or visit to your local Extension office will help you learn more about all the programs listed above and other local opportunities.

Let 2026 be the year you get surrounded by people who are committed to making a difference in the state of Mississippi!
