How to Extend the Life of Pumpkins

Pumpkins are a fall decor staple. One of my favorite fall activities is visiting a local pumpkin patch to pick pumpkins for my outdoor fall display. You know I also must look for ones perfect for carving!

Pumpkins generally have a long postharvest life, which makes them great to have out all fall. However, factors such as the weather and the pumpkin’s condition can lead to a rotting mess. If you’re looking to extend the life of your pumpkins, we’ve got a few simple steps you can take.

  1. When buying pumpkins, look for ones with no surface damage. If you find ones with bruises and signs of rotting, pass on them. If there are no defects on the pumpkin, they are likely to last longer.
  2. Take into consideration where you place your fall pumpkin display. If you have areas that are or can get wet, that’s not the best spot. Create your displays in areas that are well drained to prevent decomposition. Before arranging your pumpkin display, consider wiping down pumpkins with a 1-part bleach, 10-parts water solution to kill any bacteria.
  3. A favorite Halloween tradition for many people is to carve pumpkins. Use petroleum jelly to seal the exposed flesh. A pumpkin’s lifespan is shortened once carved, but the petroleum jelly keeps the pumpkin moist and creates a barrier to bacteria.

What do you do with pumpkins when it’s time to swap fall decor out for Christmas? We have a blog post on how to properly dispose of Halloween pumpkins. Be sure to check it out before you toss them out!
