The beginning of a new year is a great time to consider what you want to accomplish this year. Are you ready to hit the reset button for yourself and make healthy habits a priority?
Here are a few tips and resources to help you get started:
Consider a digital detox period. Set boundaries and schedule time away from digital devices even if it’s just for an hour or two each day. Be intentional about how you use your devices and avoid mindless scrolling on social media. For more tips on how to use digital devices in a more intentional way, check out this article from our friends at North Carolina Cooperative Extension.
Make healthy sleep a priority. Getting a good night’s sleep not only helps you feel refreshed the next morning, but it is also important for overall health. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day. Create a bedtime routine that includes relaxing habits to help you prepare for sleep. Avoid foods and activities, such as caffeine and vigorous exercise, close to bedtime. For more information on healthy sleep, read our MSU Extension Publication, “Sleep: As Important as Diet and Exercise for All Ages.”
Get moving. Physical activity can help you think, feel, and sleep better. The American Heart Association recommends adults participate in at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week. That’s just 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
Prioritize nutrition. Commit to eating more whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts. Life can be busy, but home-cooked meals don’t have to be complicated. For some simple recipes, check out our MSU Extension Publications “Electric Pressure Cooker Recipes,” “Air Fryer Recipes,” “Fold-and-Go Meals,” and “14-Day Shopping and Meal Plan.”
